Domain names

If you own a website, then you are going to need to have a domain name. Without one, it would be pretty tough for somebody to head to your website. On this page, we want to introduce you to the world of domain names, as well as give you a couple of hints and tips on finding the right domain name for your business.

What is a Domain Name?

Perhaps the best way to think of a domain name is as an ‘address’. In fact, that is exactly what it is.

Your domain name will point directly to your website. Once you have a domain name, somebody will tap this into their web browser, and they will be taken to your website.

Examples of domain names include: www.google.com, www.facebook.co.uk, www.qliro.se

When you take out web hosting, your website will have a unique number assigned to it, known as an IP address. Technically, if your website visitor tapped this number into their web browser, then they will find your site. However, this number isn’t easy to remember, hence why people will use a domain name instead.

How Can You Choose a Domain Name?

There are plenty of ways to choose a domain name. We will share a couple of tips with you, though. This way, it will make it a little bit easier for you to build your website.

We suggest that the domain name that you choose is descriptive of your site. This could be telling people what your site is about, or it could be a brand name for your website. Just choose something that is really descriptive of what your business is about.

When you are choosing a domain name, you will also need to choose the domain extension (.com, .co.uk, .org etc.) you will want to ensure that the extension you choose is suitable for the purpose of your website. For example; if you are a website focused on the United Kingdom, then you will want to choose a .co.uk domain name. It tells the site visitor the site is for British audiences. If your website is an educational establishment, then you will likely want to choose a .edu domain name extension.

We are sure that you will have plenty of ideas for which domain names you should use on your website. Put a lot of thought into it. You will be using this domain name for a long time to come.

How Do You Maintain a Domain Name?

To be honest, there is not much that you need to do in order to maintain your domain name.

Your one concern will be ensuring that your domain name is pointing to the right location. When you purchase web hosting, you will get given something known as ‘nameservers’. It is these nameservers that you want your domain name pointing towards.

Other than this, just make a note about when your domain name is going to be expiring. This way you can make sure that you renew it on time, or cancel it if you do not feel like continuing with the domain name.
